This is my review of the 1/100 Gundam Astray Gold Frame Amatsu.
This is the first kit of this striking Gundam from the 1/100 NG line from Gundam SeeD Destiny. It’s kind of old now and I figured I’d take a look at it before I get the RG version.
Detail – (7/10) Overall it’s a eye catching design and the mix of gloss black plastic and chrome gold with red details really makes for a awesome, menacing looking Gundam. Downside is that this kit uses lots of stickers and there are many bad nubs throughout. Nubs on many of the chromed parts and gloss black pieces are unavoidable.
Articulation – (6/10) The upper is great for a high gradish kit. Arms have good range of motion. Legs themselves are okay, but the hip joint is pretty bad and will limit any cool poses. The backpack wings have a good range but the joints are quite stiff and it’s tricky to pose for the power draining attack.
Extras – (7/10) The weapons look nice with some good detail. The arm claws are especially nicely done. The wires for the wing darts are flimsy and have trouble staying together. No beam saber for the saber attack of the triceros-kai weapon. (It was missing during the review, but there is an open hand for the Blitz arm)
Value – (5/10) This is a 3800 yen (~$34) from July 2006. It’s going on just 11 years at the time of this review and the price is the MG area of kits. You’re paying for a 1/100 scale version of a chromed HG pretty much. The 1/144 HG, while not chromed, does have the beam saber and much the same level of articulation for a much cheaper price. The price is comparable to the new RG version, which is likely superior in every way minus the chrome plating. Against those, this kit today is not the best value and really only for someone who want this in a bigger scale.
Total – (25/40) A slightly above average kit. Only get this if you want this Gundam in 1/100 and really prefer the gold chrome look. Otherwise, pass and look at the 1/144 options.
